Howard Husky Way...
many ways to be acknowledged
many ways to be acknowledged
When students have trouble with reading, we teach. When students don't know their multiplication tables, we teach. When students struggle with expected behaviors, The Howard Husky Way gives us the tools to teach our students how to behave.
It has been researched that students are more likely to practice correct behaviors if they receive frequent and specific positive feedback. Over time, the goal is to reduce the frequency of tangible acknowledgements so that the behavior becomes internalized. Research continues to show that verbal acknowledgement and encouragement should consistently be given at least four times more to every correction or reprimand. The Howard Husky Way has three acknowledgment systems.

Howard Husky Clip Up Clip Down Chart
Our clip up clip down is a visual way of showing the students how they are behaving throughout the day. Students always start on "Ready to Learn" in the beginning of the day. When they make good choices, staff can choose to "clip up" the student to remind them and others what the Howard Husky expectations are. On the other hand, when a student needs reminders that they are misbehaving or making poor choices, a staff member could choose to give them a"clip down". The student has a chance all day to go up or down on the chart. Kindergarten classes have a smaller version of the chart that looks like a stop and go light with a blue crown on top.
Howard Husky Tickets/Bucks
Students at Howard can receive tickets when they demonstrate positive behavior expectations. All staff can give students tickets for behaviors that are helpful to our Howard Husky family. At the end of the day, all classrooms give one ticket to the students who are "Ready to Learn" (green) and two tickets to the students who are on "Excellent Effort", "Way to Go" & "Super Student" (blue, indigo, purple). Each classroom has their own way of using accumulated tickets in an auction/school store format. It may happen weekly, monthly, or quarterly.
Howard Husky Bingo
Howard staff are able to acknowledge the whole class when they are complying with our Howard Husky Way. Staff can give from 1 to 3 bingo numbers to the classes who are "caught being good". The bingo numbers are recorded on a 25 or 100 number chart (depending on the grade). When the class gets a whole line in a row (BINGO), they earn an incentive such as extra recess, camp out and read, chewing gum, etc. This is voted on by the class.
